As America gears up for its 4th of July celebration, we’re going to take this week’s blogs and explore art and creativity as it related to patriotism and events around this celebration. Today here’s our list of 5 must-see patriotic films:

1. Patton: The story of General George S. Patton, famed commander of World War II. This film swept the Oscars in 1970 with Best Actor, Best Director, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Screenplay…and Best Picture.

Patriotic Plot: Idealistic Jefferson Smith (Jimmy Stewart) is appointed on a lark to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. He's confronted with crooked politicians and corrupt practices in Washington, but he refuses to give up fighting for a democratic government, for the people and by the people. The Oscar-winning film was attacked by Congress at the time, but is now hailed as a quintessential whistleblower film that shows deep love for America's democratic heritage.

2. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: One man goes to Washington to change the country! Starring Jimmy Stewart and directed by the great Frank Capra.

3. Saving Private Ryan: Steven Spielberg weaves a fictitious story about a lost story in with the tragedy and violence surrounding D-Day during World War II.

4. The Sandlot: “So why is this kids movie on here?” you ask. Nothing is more patriotic on the 4th of July than cookouts, fireworks and baseball -and you’ve got it all here. Feel what it was like to be a teen on this holiday in 1962.

Patriotic plot: Mel Gibson plays normal, goodhearted farmer Benjamin Martin, living with his family in Colonial times during the American Revolution. But when a British officer kills his son, he grabs his trusty axe and joins the military effort, helping take out the unwanted forces occupying his lands.

5. The Patriot: So we know a lot of you may be over Mel Gibson, but this film is still a great telling of the battles fought around the founding of our country.
